What is therapeutic ultrasound

Ultra sound as a therapeutic modality is a time tested therapy for many soft tissue injuries. Not to be confused with diagnostic ultrasound that can produce visible images of internal structures; therapeutic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to treat damaged, injured soft tissues. Most commonly: muscles, tendons, ligaments and joint capsules. Ultra sound is unique in that it can deliver a deep, penetrative heat to tissue structures that can not otherwise be heated.

How does therapeutic ultrasound work?

Ultra Sound Therapy achieves the delivery of deep penetrative heat into soft tissue by emitting sound waves through a wand held by the doctor into the area of damaged soft tissue. The sound waves emitted from the ultra sound wand are at a frequency that humans can not hear. The sound waves are absorbed into the injured soft tissues and cause the cells of the soft tissue to begin vibrating back and forth. this vibration of the cells causes friction between the surfaces of the individual cells thus creating heat generation deep withing the soft tissue.

The Ultra sound head is applied to the affected area after the area and applicator head are both covered in a special gel that allows for easy transfer of sound waves from wand to skin contact. The procedure can last anywhere from 12-15 minutes depending on the area being treated. The entire procedure is painless. if the applicator wand is held stationary for a prolonged period of time the patient may feel heat. Often times towards the end of a 10-1 minute treatment the entire treatment area will feel warm.

Is Ultra Sound Therapy right for me?

Therapeutic Ultrasound can be used in the active treatment of many acute and chronic conditions.

Sprains and strains

Sprains and strains of muscles tendons and ligamentous structures are often treated with ultrasound to help increase circulation of fluids around the injury and decrease pain. Ultra sound therapy can effectively break up the pebble like adhesions found in tendons and around joints. Ultrasound can be used before other manual therapies; massage, chiropractic manipulation, therapeutic exercise, to properly warm up injured tissues before applying more aggressive therapies.

Calcific Tendonitis

Tendonitis has shown to benefit from ultrasound therapy and offer symptomatic relief. Plantar Fasciitis is a often debilitating condition involving the plantar tendon on the bottom of your feet. By focusing the ultra sounds into the inflamed tissue we can safely and effectively offer alternatives to dangerous steroid injections and risky surgery.

Bursitis

Bursae are commonly found throughout our body in between surfaces that regularly glide across one another. These bursae are fluid filled sacs that allow tendons to glide smoothly with little friction . Often times with over use or repetitive micro-trauma these fluid filled sacks become irritated and inflammed causing moderate to severe pain with movement. Application of ultra sounds can passively reduce the inflammation surrounding the bursae and provide pain relief. common areas of bursitis are in the shoulder involving the deltoid bursae or in the hip involving the sub-trochanteric bursae.
